David Dixon was born and raised in Toronto. He has enjoyed tremendous media acclaim and been recognized as one of the leaders in the Canadian fashion scene. Inspiring clients, media and colleagues since he began designing, David is a Canadian fashion leader. After ten years running his own label, he captures eyes, hearts and imaginations.
David polished his innovative construction skills at Toronto's Ryerson University, graduating in 1993. Before beginning his own company, he was fortunate to apprentice with another inspirational Canadian designer, Alfred Sung. After those experiences, he was ready to make his vision a reality.
In 1995 he established the David Dixon label. He moved into in a studio at the TFI, where he started wholesaling and manufacturing his line. A mere year after starting his label, he was named City of Toronto New Designer of the Year and City of Toronto Designer of the Year (2000-2001). Even though David left the TFI to open his own studio, he remains affliated with the TFI by sitting on the Board as an advisor and acting as a mentor to new designers.
Davids's designs are about evolution, not revolution. He strives for growth within his collections from one season to the next, rather than radically jumping from one fashion trend to another. His designs have been worn by various celebrities including Meg Ryan, Wendy Crewson, Ashley MacIsaac, Holly Cole, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Paul Gross and newcomer Kristen Booth.
The overriding theme in Davids's collection is luxury. His belief is that women respond first to colour and texture; when silhouettes are kept simple and modern, he can play with fabrics. For David, fabric is vital, so he takes care and pleasure in finding the perfect textiles. In his quest, he searches the globe each season for innovative materials and even creates his own signature fabrics. Ultimately, Davids's clothing combines luxury with functionality, and fantasy with sensibility.
David has received a number of prestigious awards during his career: the Saga International Scholarship in Copenhagen, Denmark (2000-2001); the Matinee Fashion Foundation Grant (1998-2002); City of Toronto New Designer of the Year (1996); Yorkdale New Designer of the Year (1995); and the Fur Council of Canada bronze award (1998). David also received acclaim in his career at Ryerson by placing as second runner up in the Smirnoff International Young Designer Competition and the Moore Pearsal Leather Competition.
